🏷️ Description:
How did African dance performances shape China’s understanding of Africa during the Mao era? In this Sydney China Distinguished Fellow lecture, Professor Emily Wilcox (William & Mary) explores three significant yet under-researched cultural exchange tours from Algeria, Guinea, and Congo in the 1960s. She examines how Chinese audiences received African dancersβ€”framing them through revolutionary and anti-colonial lensesβ€”and how Chinese performers engaged with African dance as an act of solidarity and cultural kinship.

This event is supported by the Sydney China Distinguished Fellowship and hosted by the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

πŸŽ“ Topics: Sino-African Relations, Dance History, Socialist China, Cultural Exchange, African Studies
