This Mandarin-language literary event explores the emotional and historical legacy of China’s Cultural Revolution through the novel 红黑时代 (Children of the Revolution: The Red and The Black) by writer 之光 (Zhi Guang). The talk will include a conversation with the author alongside writers and scholars who will reflect on how political trauma has shaped a generation of Chinese immigrants and how diasporic literature navigates the burden of remembering.
Set during the Cultural Revolution, Zhi Guang’s novel follows two protagonists through the violence of ideological struggle, and their eventual emigration to the United States in search of freedom and renewal. The discussion will examine historical trauma, diaspora identity, and the role of literature in cultural reckoning.
