Founder & Editor-in-chief

Manya Koetse is a China media watcher and the editor-in-chief of www.whatsonweibo.com. She is a writer, public speaker, and consultant (Sinologist, MPhil) on social trends in China, with a focus on online media and digital developments, popular culture, and gender issues.

Manya founded What’s on Weibo in 2014 to provide societal, cultural, and historical insights into an ever-changing China through the lens of Chinese social media. What’s on Weibo is fully managed by Koetse, who has written over 800 articles on this site over the past few years.

Miranda Barnes is a Chinese blogger, media watcher, and part-time translator. She has a strong interest in Chinese online media and culture, and has been What’s on Weibo’s assignment editor, selecting news events and feature stories, since the summer of 2017. Born in Shenyang, Barnes now lives in Beijing with her British husband. On www.abearandapig.com they share news of their year-long trip around Europe and Asia.

Gabi Verberg is a Business graduate from the University of Amsterdam who has worked and studied in Shanghai and Beijing (Beijing Language and Culture University). She now lives in Amsterdam and works as a part-time translator, with a particular interest in Chinese modern culture and politics. Gabi is a reporter and researcher for What’s on Weibo since summer of 2018.

Richard Barnes is a blogger, part-time translator, and China-based musician. Born in London, he moved to Beijing where he now lives with his with his wife Miranda Barnes.
