๐ท๏ธ Description:
How did African dance performances shape Chinaโs understanding of Africa during the Mao era? In this Sydney China Distinguished Fellow lecture, Professor Emily Wilcox (William & Mary) explores three significant yet under-researched cultural exchange tours from Algeria, Guinea, and Congo in the 1960s. She examines how Chinese audiences received African dancersโframing them through revolutionary and anti-colonial lensesโand how Chinese performers engaged with African dance as an act of solidarity and cultural kinship.
This event is supported by the Sydney China Distinguished Fellowship and hosted by the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.
๐ Topics: Sino-African Relations, Dance History, Socialist China, Cultural Exchange, African Studies
